Primary Function

 

The Music Director is responsible for providing the leadership for the Chancel Choir and Joyful Ringers. This includes directing both groups as well as accompanying them on the piano and playing the organ during worship.  The goal is to develop and nurture an adult worship choir that can sing songs from a wide variety of musical styles, as well as direct the Handbell Choir.

 

Responsibilities

 

  •          Works with the Chancel Choir and Handbell group to enhance the 9:00 traditional worship service.
             Selects hymns and service music for the choir and bells.
             Selects music for the Chancel Choir that reflects the theme and message for the worship service.
  •          Lead rehearsals for the Chancel Choir (on Sunday morning) and Joyful Ringers (on Monday evening). The Chancel 
         Choir season runs from the first Sunday in August through the last Sunday in June. The Hand Bell season runs
         from the first Monday in September through the last Monday in May).
  •          Leads the choirs and congregation during the 9:00 a.m. service each week, except during the month of July when
         the choir is on break. Prior to July, you will arrange for other choirs, soloists or special performances for each
         Sunday in July.
  •          Responsible for the Chancel Choir’s appearance, sound, and delivery in worship.
  •          Responsible for recruiting new members throughout the year from the overall church community.
  •          Maintains a clean area in the choir loft, choir room, robe room, and handbell room.
  •          Rehearses and accompanies vocal and instrumental soloists when needed.
  •          Maintains the music library by organizing and filing anthems and cantatas.
  •          Understands that occasional “special” worship services may require music and that may mean working on those
         specific days/times. (ie. Christmas Eve, Ash Wednesday, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday, etc.)
  •          Performs other related duties as may be assigned to further the ministry of WUMC. The above duties are not
         intended to be an inclusive list.

 


Minimum Requirements

 

  •          Bachelor’s degree in related field preferred.
  •          Must have the ability to proficiently play the piano and organ.
  •          Acts as a spiritual leader for the music ministry.
  •          Possessed an understanding of, and appreciation for, the United Methodist liturgy/liturgical music.
  •          Must have directing experience and leadership skills
  •          Possesses a knowledge of a wide variety of musical styles and the ability to teach these varying styles to the           
         ensembles.
  •          Possessed a positive attitude and effective interpersonal communication skills.
  •          Possesses good organizational skills.
  •          Ability to demonstrate and maintain a cooperative team spirit with staff, volunteers, and congregation; the ministry
         at Windcrest UMC is a team ministry.
  •          Must complete Safe Gatherings/TRUSTed Con Confianza training. (includes a background check.)
