This year’s advent theme is going to focus on coming home. Home can mean different things to different people depending on our time, place and circumstance. When it came time to deciding on this year’s advent ministry outreach Habitat for Humanity instantly came to mind.  As many of you know, WUMC is part of the Ecumenical Genesis Cluster and is sponsoring a house being built this Fall. The family WUMC is sponsoring Is Gabriel Gomez and Esperanza Leal. They have two children Daniel age 10 and Abrielle age 3. Daniel loves video games and basketball. Abrielle loves pizza. Their mom works in a support role in a pediatrics office, and she loves building cabinets when she volunteers. She is also very proud that she learned how to patch drywall in the home maintenance class. Their dad works as custodian for the school district and he’s excited about having his own place and stability. They are currently living with Gabriel’s mom. The Gomez family are excited about being part of the home buying program and for the opportunity to become homeowners. “Besides always wanting to be a homeowner, Habitat homes are very affordable.  We are both hard working, caring people and very excited for this opportunity to give our children a home of their own. We can’t wait to be living in our own home. We are so happy for the Habitat program. Thank you, Habitat, for giving us this opportunity. We are very happy!”

Habitat for Humanity has many volunteers, but they are always in need of help with the following items for their volunteer services:

  •  First-Aid kits
  •  Band-Aids
  •  Cold packs
  •  Sunscreen
  •  Bug spray
  •  Gatorade
  •  Gift cards for Wal-Mart, HEB or Visa gift card
  •  Gift cards for fast food such as Burger King or McDonalds
(You can support two ministries by purchasing gift cards through Scrip)

The above items are what we will be collecting this advent to donate to Habitat for Humanity. Items can be turned into the church or day school office or placed under the Christmas tree in the Sanctuary. Gift cards should be taken to the church or day school office. Please consider helping and donating what you can to show support to the many volunteers who graciously donate their time. Here is a link to Amazon for a items needed for Habitat for Humanity

Socks and underwear tree

Look for the “socks and undies” tree in the Gathering Place throughout the season of Advent. The Children & Youth are sponsoring this event . We are collecting socks and underwear for Christmas for adults and children. These necessities are often overlooked when we make donations to help friends in need. Bring your donations on Sunday or drop off in the church office anytime during Advent, they will be donated to Agape.
